Toothbrush – The handle is made from sustainable bamboo and the bristles are made from all-natural castor bean oil. Metal staples are used to clamp the bristles to the handle (common in all toothbrush manufacturing).

Toothbrush – Before first use, thoroughly rinse the toothbrush handle and bristles with water. There may be some bamboo dust that remains on the toothbrush head and handle after manufacturing. Apply the desired amount of toothpaste and brush. Rinse well after each use and keep in a dry ventilated area when not in use.
Plant Based Dental Floss – The floss comes encased in a paper-based box that uses vegetable-based inks for printing and only non-toxic glues. Window and safety seal required by Health Canada are plant-based PHA and PLA cello (see End of Life Disposal for important information on PHA and PLA).

Plant Based Dental Floss
98% Bio-based Floss – manufacturer is working towards compostability certification. Please contact them if more information is desired.
Stainless Steel – check to see if it can be recycled with your city or residential recycling program. If not, collect with other scrap metals and take to a scrap yard when it is convenient for you.
PHA and PLA – used for window and safety seal – the optimal solution is to direct these materials to an industrial composting facility where things like controlled temperature and the presence of microorganisms accelerate decomposition. Breakdown typically occurs in a few months or less under these conditions. Unfortunately finding such a facility in your locale may prove to be difficult and the alternative, placing these materials into the recycle bin, oftentimes will not yield the desired result.
Industry has yet to develop the infrastructure needed to effectively sort and properly process PLA or PHA “bioplastics” which currently results in the majority of PLA and PHA being landfilled. When this happens, it typically takes many decades (in some cases several hundred years) for these materials to break down entirely.

Toothbrush
This toothbrush is composed of three parts: a handle, bristles, and metal staples that are used to clamp the bristles to the handle (metal staples are used in most toothbrush manufacturing).
Bamboo – similar to what happens in a natural environment, bamboo will completely decompose but the amount of time this takes is dependent on things like soil composition, temperature, and the size and density of the object, amongst others. Time frames can range from a few months to a few years. Breaking it down into smaller pieces can accelerate the process of decomposition and this is recommended before introducing it into an environment that’s suitable for composting.
Staples – the metal (aluminum) in this toothbrush will break down through chemical reactions in the environment.
Bristles – the USDA Certified 100% Biobased bristles are biobased but not compostable. Although these bristles will eventually return to the soil (manufacturer claim), if desired, you may remove them with plyers. Terracycle has a program in place for these hard to recycle materials.
