Glass Jar
Metal Lid
Cut to desired length and follow oral hygiene expert’s tips for flossing.
The reusable container is made of glass and the lid is made of metal. The floss comes encased in a paper-based box that uses vegetable-based inks for printing and only non-toxic glues. Window and safety seal required by Health Canada are plant-based PHA and PLA cello (see End of Life Disposal for important information on PHA and PLA).
Keep the container and its contents (when not in use) dry.
China
Silk Floss – will return to the soil. Place it in an environment that is suitable for composting.
Glass Jar – recyclable through most city and residential recycling programs.
Metal Lid – check to see if it can be recycled with your city or residential recycling program. If not, collect with other scrap metals and take to a scrap yard when it is convenient for you.
PHA and PLA – used for window and safety seal – the optimal solution is to direct these materials to an industrial composting facility where things like controlled temperature and the presence of microorganisms accelerate decomposition. Breakdown typically occurs in a few months or less under these conditions. Unfortunately finding such a facility in your locale may prove to be difficult and the alternative, placing these materials into the recycle bin, oftentimes will not yield the desired result.
Industry has yet to develop the infrastructure needed to effectively sort and properly process PLA or PHA “bioplastics” which currently results in the majority of PLA and PHA being landfilled. When this happens, it typically takes many decades (in some cases several hundred years) for these materials to break down entirely.
1 jar with 164 ft of floss plus two refills (328 ft).
